McKinley Trophy

On 12th January 1979, the eldest son of Patrington Cricket Club legend Geoff McKinley was tragically killed in neighbouring village Thorngumbald, while riding his motorcycle. Nigel McKinley was a tremendously popular young lad. He had played cricket for the 2nd team in the summer of 1978, and was admired by all that came into contact with him. Understandably, his untimely death, at just 19 years of age, shocked local cricketing circles. At the onset of the 1979 summer, there was a strong appetite from neighbouring village teams to join Patrington CC in remembering Nigel. And so, the Nigel McKinley Memorial Trophy was launched.

In September that year, the trophy was presented for the first time to Aldborough’s cricket club captain, by the oldest of Nigel’s two sisters, Kerry. Photographed alongside the Aldborough team below is Nigel’s father, Geoff, his late mother Dorothy, sisters Kerry and Micki, brother Jason, and Patrington CC legend, Tony Rands, whom umpired the final.

More than thirty years on, local clubs continue to play matches to secure the trophy, with youngsters and fringe players having the chance to shine, with the final often being the curtain-closing game of Patrington Cricket Club’s season. The original trophy continues to be presented at the end of every season by Nigel’s proud and grateful relatives, with Nigel’s sisters and cricketing brothers and nephews having handed the trophy to winning captains through the years.
